[edit] Hammer Mod

There are several methods available to adjust the Injection Quantity (IQ) on the ALH engine. The one discussed here is called the "Hammer Mod," which adjusts the static IQ of the Injection Pump (as opposed to adjusting the "dynamic" IQ via VAG-COM).

To perform the Hammer Mod is simple:

As you look down the top of the Injection Pump, you will see 3 T-30 Torx bolts and a recessed hex bolt. Below the 3 T-30 Torx bolts, you will see 3 more T-30 Torx bolts. You want the lower set of 3 T-30 Torx bolts. You do NOT want to loosen the upper set of T-30 Torx bolts. You also do NOT want to loosen the recessed hex bolt. The adjustments should be performed with the car off.

  1. Warm the car to operating temperature
  2. Verify readings in VAG-COM as to what your current IQ is set to.
  3. Loosen the 3 T30 Torx bolts (no need to loosen the 4th recessed hex bolt)
  4. Tap the IQ adjuster 2 - 3 times to adjust your IQ.
  5. Re-tighten the bolts, start car and check your IQ via VAG-COM
  6. Repeat the process as necessary until your IQ is where you want it to be.

You want your IQ to be in the 3.4 - 4.0 range.

IQ settings are intuitively backwards. When you raise your IQ, you are lowering the amount of fuel being injected per stroke. So a value of 8 will be injecting less fuel than a value of 4. Please keep this in mind if you are adjusting your IQ to eliminate smoke (or generate smoke!) or improve your fuel economy.

  • If you wish to raise your IQ (to inject less fuel), tap the IQ adjuster on the drivers side.
  • If you wish to lower your IQ (to inject more fuel), tap the IQ adjuster on the passenger side.

This is the Hammer Mod in a nutshell. It is very easy to accomplish and it would be hard to damage your car with this method.
