B5 Platform

B5 is the fourth generation Volkswagen FWD watercooled midsize car platform. It is shared with the fifth generation Audi FWD watercooled midsize car platform, as used by the Audi A4.
The B5 Passat sedan and station wagon were offered from 1998 to 2005. Enthusiasts refer to a facelifted version of the B5 platform, released in 2001.5, as "B5.5".
Two 1998 B5 Passat TDIs with the 1.9L ALH engine code TDI engine were built for display at auto shows. One had been located in Minnesota as of March of 2006.
Volkswagen also sold both sedans and wagons with the 2.0L BHW engine code engine and an automatic transmission for model years 2004 and 2005.
