Wheels MK4
From TDIClub
VW a4-platform cars with 15" wheels in the US.
Stock tire specification is 195/65R15 91H:
- 195mm wide
- 65 aspect ratio (sidewall is 65% as tall as tire is wide, or 195mm * 0.65 = 126mm)
- R = radial
- 15" wheel
- 91 load rating (note: many tires in this size have a load rating of 89; some tires offer both 89 and 91 load rating versions)
- H (130mph) speed rating (S and T are lower speed ratings; V and Z are higher speed ratings)
Some VW a4-platform cars have pressure recommendations of up to 45psi under full load conditions.
- Tires typically come with maximum pressure ratings of 35psi, 44psi, or 51psi.
- Check that the pressure rating on the new tires is at least as high as the recommendation found behind the fuel door or on the door jamb. 35psi maximum is probably too low for all VW a4-platform cars. Those cars which specify 45psi need tires that are rated for 51psi.
Common stock tires are all low rolling resistance models:
- Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus
- Continental CH95
- Goodyear Eagle LS
In addition, the Bridgestone Turanza EL400 is probably a low rolling resistance tire, since it is found as an stock tire on other new cars.
Do not be surprised if fuel economy is lowered by a few mpg after installing new tires that are not low rolling resistance models. Consider the extra fuel used over the life of the tire as part of the cost of the tire.
Many people prefer a sportier tire for better handling and braking (safety), and are willing to accept higher fuel consumption and/or faster tire wear.
Drivers who have a snow and/or ice season that is relatively long and predictable may want to purchase an extra set of wheels with winter tires mounted on them for better traction and safety in winter conditions. Because winter tires wear out quickly and perform poorly in non snow and/or ice conditions, changing back to non-winter tires is necessary when the snow and/or ice season is over. Those who face only occasional unpredictable snow and/or ice may find that choosing all-season tires with good (for an all-season tire) snow and ice performance may work out better.
The torque specification of the wheel bolts is 89ft-lb or 120Nm.
